Finding Jannah

بسم الله والحمد الله

It is important to note that we do not find Jannah through our deeds, rather our deeds help us find the Pleasure and Mercy of Allah (ﷻ), and by the Mercy of Allah (ﷻ) do we find Jannah.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Follow the right course, seek nearness to Allah, and give glad tidings. Verily, none of you will enter Paradise by his deeds alone.” They said, “Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Not even me, unless Allah grants me his mercy. Know that the most beloved deed to Allah is that which is done regularly, even if it is small.”
- [Sahih al-Bukhair & Sahih Muslim]

When it comes to finding Jannah, it is explained in the following hadith:

It is narrated on the authority of Jabir that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said:

Messenger of Allah, what are the two things quite unavoidable? He replied: He who dies without associating anyone with Allah would (necessarily) enter Paradise and he who dies associating anything with Allah would enter the (Fire of) Hell.
- [Sahih Muslim]

So long as one dies in a state of Imaan, dies on the belief of Tawhid, Jannah is inevitable for them.

Allah (ﷻ) Says:

“Verily, Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases, and whoever sets up partners with Allah in worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous sin”
- [an-Nisa’ 4:48] .

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

"Whoever said "None has the right to be worshiped but Allah and has in his heart good (faith) equal to the weight of a barley grain will be taken out of Hell. And whoever said: "None has the right to be worshiped but Allah and has in his heart good (faith) equal to the weight of a wheat grain will be taken out of Hell. And whoever said, "None has the right to be worshiped but Allah and has in his heart good (faith) equal to the weight of an atom will be taken out of Hell."
- [Sahih al-Bukhari]

Then there is a matter of those who seek glad tidings of a complete forgiveness, safety from touching the Fire and seek shade under the Throne of Allah (ﷻ) on a day when there is no shade but His, those that seek to be from among those closest to Allah (ﷻ), those that seek the highest levels of Jannah, al-Firdaus al-A'la. Allah (ﷻ) says regarding them:

“and the foremost (in faith) will be the foremost (in Paradise). They are the ones nearest (to Allah). In the Gardens of Bliss.”
- [al-Waaqi‘ah 56:10-12]

To give context to what is meant by "They are the ones nearest (to Allah)", Ibn al-Qayyim said:

The purest of all created things, and the most sublime, luminous, noblest and highest in both literal and metaphorical terms is the Throne of the Most Gracious, may He be glorified and exalted. Hence it was fit for Him to rise above it. Therefore the closer anything is to the Throne, the more luminous, pure and noble it is than that which is further away from it. Hence Jannat al-Firdaws is the highest, noblest, most luminous and best part of Paradise, because it is close to the Throne, for the Throne is its roof, and the further away anything is from it, the darker and more constricted it is. Hence the lowest of the low is the worst of places and the most constricted and furthest from all that is good. - [Al-Fawaa’id]

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“al-Firdaws is the highest part of Paradise, and the centre and the best of it.”
- [at-Tirmidhi - Sahih]

We must strive in order to find such a prize. We must strive against our desires and be patient upon the path of obedience and goodness.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Paradise is surrounded with difficulties and Hell is surrounded with desires.”
- [Sahih Muslim]

Ibn al-Qayyim (RH) said regarding this hadith:

It should be noted that the bitterness of this world is the essence of sweetness in the Hereafter, as Allah will turn the former into the latter. Similarly, the sweetness of this world is the essence of bitterness in the Hereafter. It is better to move from temporary bitterness to eternal sweetness than the other way round. - [Zaad al-Ma’aad]

We must show humility to Allah (ﷻ) by supplicating to Him and asking Him for assistance on the path to His Pleasure and Grace and to make that path easy for us. Success is only with Allah (ﷻ).

Allah (ﷻ) Says:

“As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, And believes in Al-Husna, We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness).”
- [al-Layl 92:5-7]

There are many authentic reports that we can also try to implement in our lives in hopes to attain the greatest of ranks in the afterlife. Below are a few that are a few examples:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Whoever sincerely asks Allah for martyrdom, Allah will cause him to attain the status of the martyrs, even if he dies in his bed.”
- [Sahih Muslim]

“Shall I not tell you something by means of which Allah erases sins and raises people in status?” They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: “Doing wudoo’ properly at times when it is difficult to do so, taking many steps to the mosque, and waiting for prayer after prayer. That is constant readiness.”
- [Sahih Muslim]

“The one who sponsors an orphan, whether it is a relative of his or not, he and I will be like these two in Paradise,” and Maalik pointed with his forefinger and middle finger.
- [Sahih Muslim]

Rabee‘ah ibn Ka‘b al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

I used to stay overnight with the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and bring him water for wudoo’ and whatever he needed. He said to me: “Ask.” I said: I ask to be with you in Paradise. He said: “Is there anything else?” I said: That is all, He said: “Help me to do that for you by prostrating a great deal.
- [Sahih Muslim]
