Purifying the heart
بسم الله والحمد الله
والصلاة واسلام على رسول الله
The path to purifying the heart cannot be rushed, as it requires sincerity and conscious action and that path is without a doubt in the remembrance of Allah ﷻ in the heart and the manifestation of said remembrance upon the limbs.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The difference between the one who remembers his Lord and the one who does not is like the difference between the living and the dead"
- [Sahih al-Bukhari]
Shaykh Ibn Taimiyya (rh) said:
"Remembrance of Allah is to the heart what water is to fish. What happens to a fish when it is taken out of water?" - [Purification of the Soul]
What greater remembrance is there than the recitation of the Quran. Immersing oneself the recitation, understanding, contemplation and acting upon the Quran is key to purifying the heart.
Allah ﷻ Says:
"O humanity! Indeed, there has come to you a warning from your Lord, a cure for what is in the hearts, a guide, and a mercy for the believers."
- [Surah Yunus 10:57]
"And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss."
- [Surah al-Isra 17:82]
"The halal is clear and the haram is clear, and between them are matters unclear that are unknown to most people. Whoever is wary of these unclear matters has absolved his religion and honor. And whoever indulges in them has indulged in the haram. It is like a shepherd who herds his sheep too close to preserved sanctuary, and they will eventually graze in it. Every king has a sanctuary, and the sanctuary of Allah is what He has made haram. There lies within the body a piece of flesh. If it is sound, the whole body is sound; and if it is corrupted, the whole body is corrupted. Verily this piece is the heart."
- [Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim]
In this hadith we are told about the clarity of matters which are halal and haram and how we should avoid matters which are doubtful. This is the manifestation of the remembrance of Allah ﷻ upon the limbs, that one is obedient to Allah ﷻ in fulfilling the obligations and staying far from disobedience and taking precaution when getting close to what is doubtful in fear of falling into disobedience or worse. The hadith ends with the mentioning of the heart, making the connection with the state of the heart and our acts of obedience, disobedience and caution
Sheikh Abu Bakr bin Salim (rh) said:
"Know that the heart is like a house, if residence is immediately taken up in it, then it will endure, however if left abandoned it falls into a state of dilapidation. Remembrance and obedience cultivate the heart, whilst heedlessness and disobedience render the heart in a state of ruin. So, whoever increases both his remembrance and obedience will prolong the life of his heart, whilst whoever increases in heedlessness and his remembrance is frugal, his heart will surely die" - [The Key to the Inner-Secrets and the Coin of Treasures]
