al-Nafs al-Lawwaamah - The Reproaching Soul

I swear by the Day of Resurrection, And I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection]. - [Surah al-Qiyamah 75:1-2] The Day of Resurrection is a reminder for us all of our accountability, a Day of great regret, as Allah  ﷻ  says: وَأَنذِرْهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْحَسْرَةِ إِذْ قُضِىَ ٱلْأَمْرُ وَهُمْ فِى غَفْلَةٍۢ وَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ ٣٩ And warn them, [O Muhammad], of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be concluded; and [yet], they are in [a state of] heedlessness, and they do not believe. - [Surah Maryam 19:39] I understood the statement, "I swear by the reproaching soul" as a comment on the value of such a soul, that his reproach for his own actions would be a protection for him, a praised soul, so significant that Allah  ﷻ  takes an oath by it. In Maarif ul-Quran it is mentioned: Sayyidna Ibn

La tahzan (Do not grieve)

-By Iffat  بسم اللّٰه والحمد اللّٰه والصلاة واسلام على رسول اللّٰه ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَٱلْحَيَوٰةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًۭا ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٢ ˹He is the One˺ Who created death and life in order to test which of you is best in deeds. And He is the Almighty, All-Forgiving (67:2) Allah gave us life in order to test who among us is best in deeds. The life of this world is full of trials and tests. Every single human being experiences some form of pain/suffering in this world. This is the very nature of this world. However, the affair of the believer is different from others. The Prophet pbuh said: “Wondrous is the affair of the believer for there is good for him in every matter and this is not the case with anyone except the believer. If he is happy, then he thanks Allah and thus there is good for him, and if he is harmed, then he shows patience and thus there is good for him.” The believer submits himself to the will of Allah. What does it mean to s

Contemporary Identity-Issues within the Islamic World

بسم اللّٰه والحمد اللّٰه والصلاة واسلام على رسول اللّٰه - By Iffat We have despoiled the inheritance that we from our fathers won. The heaven from the zenith has dashed it down -Iqbal Ever since the second World War and the subsequent emancipation of various colonies of the west, the affected people have been groping in the wreckage to find their identity, a sense of belongingness to where they came from, a sense of history which was mercilessly denied to them. One of the major groups affected by this phenomenon is Muslims. Muslim psyche has been undergoing this phenomenon for more than fifty years now wherein they've been, not exclusively so, conditioned to believe that anything the west does not approve of is categorically inferior including their own civilization. The Muslim youth unfortunately has yielded to the diligent attempts of the west to pull asunder the strings that bind them with their ancestors. Everything Western is appealing to them, from sartorial choices to year-r

Khushu' in Salah

بسم اللّٰه والحمد اللّٰه والصلاة واسلام على رسول اللّٰه - By Ruh Allah ﷻ says: Successful indeed are the believers. Those who in their prayer are  khaashi’oon  [have humility and attentiveness]. - [al-Muminoon 23:1-2] We all desire to be focused in our  salah , we hope to find comfort and peace within while we stand before our Lord ﷻ. However, we often find that our  salah  feels empty. One could say our  salah  is lacking in  khushu' , which is the soul of  salah  and it is something we all should strive to achieve. DEFINITIONS AND USES: In order for us to make an effort to find  khushu'  it is important to understand what is meant by the term. The dictionary definitions for the verb  khasha'a  (خَشَعَ) given are:  to be submissive, be humble; to humble oneself, reduce to submission, to display humility; to be moved, be touched.  The word  khushu'  (خُشُوعٌ), which we commonly use, is defined as:  submissiveness, submission, humility. From these definitions we can sens

Motivation To Learn Arabic

By Zaid A desire everyone has or claims to have is the desire to meet the Prophet  ﷺ  or to meet one of the companions like Umar (ra) or Ali (ra) or even to meet one of the great scholars of Islam like Abu Hanifah or Ahmad  (rh) . I want you to imagine you were granted that wish. Allah ﷻ gives you right now the ability to speak with one of them in a coffee shop. You go there, get a coffee, and sit down on the table in front of him. Then, you say, " Assalamu alaikum , I am Zaid! I've always wished to meet you." Perhaps you start crying out of happiness when you say this. In front of you, he understands nothing you said except the Salam . He responds to your Salam , but doesn't really understand what you're saying or why you're crying. He doesn't know that you have always wished to meet him. You cannot talk to him, and he cannot talk to you. This is how Muslims who don't know Arabic are. I am like that

Can Allah ﷻ forgive me?

By Iffat Anyone that knows me knows I am an inherently confused person who is sure about very few things. That is to emphasize that if I tell you something with certainty then it must be something that I believe in vehemently and earnestly. We sometimes find that when one sins, even when they turn to Allah ﷻ, they still question, can Allah ﷻ forgive me? Now the answer to the question in point is a resounding YES, Allah ﷻ is the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful. Abu Huraira ( rh ) reported: The Messenger of Allah  ﷺ    said, "When Allah completed the creation, He wrote in His book with Him upon the Throne: Verily, My mercy prevails over My wrath." - [Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim] Allah’s Mercy is greater than His Wrath as The Most Merciful says so Himself ﷻ: "O My servants who have exceeded the limits against their souls! Do not lose hope in Allah's mercy, for Allah certainly forgives all sins. He is indeed

The Book and Sunnah - Imam al-Haddad

By Ruh Chapter 10 of "The Book of Assistance" by Imam al-Haddad (rh): On Following the Book and Sunnah. You must hold fast to the Book and the sunna. Take refuge in them, for they are the upright religion of Allah, and His straight path. Those who adhere to them find safety, profit, guidance and protection, while those who deviate from them go astray, grieve, lose, and are broken. Let them govern you and control what you do, and consult them in your every affair, in obedience to the counsel of Allah and that of His Messenger; O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you! If you have a dispute concerning any matter, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and of fairer consequence. - [Q 4:59] Refer it to Allah and the Messenger means, 'refer it to the Book and sunna.' The Messenger of Allah, may blessings and peace be upo
